4 Qualities to Look for in an Auto Repair Shop
Most of us are loyal to brands, auto repair included. Once we pick a shop (and have a good experience), we’re a customer forever. Whether you’re still searching for a home shop, or you’ve already got one, it’s important that these four qualities are present in your service interactions.
1. Attention to Detail
This might seem basic but…is the shop clean? If they can’t take the time to wipe down the bathroom or organize printed documents on the front desk, what else are they overlooking? Some mess is to be expected working with grease and oil, but a shop that puts pride in their customer-facing areas gives the same attention to detail on your repair or maintenance.
2. Reliability
Cars can be unpredictable and sometimes parts fail after a repair. Ask the Service Manager about their warranty policy – so you have a clear understanding of what is and isn’t covered. A good auto shop will provide a written guarantee on parts and labor for a certain time/mileage (e.g., 2 years/24,000 miles). Get some peace of mind knowing you can rely on your shop to keep you on the road.
3. Active Communication
Some shops are better at customer service than others. Work with a Service Manager that actively listens as you describe the weird noise or blinking light in your car. If they’re dismissive of your suggestions, it’s probably not a good fit.
Occasionally, technicians may find an issue beyond the scope of the initial service request. You should always receive a call that provides details and an accurate estimate of additional costs. Do not settle for a shop that doesn’t ask for permission before doing extra work.
4. Honesty
Technicians are trained in auto repair, so we’re likely to trust their opinion. Unfortunately, this is how dishonest shops take advantage of people. The Service Manager should walk you through the estimate, break down costs by parts and labor, and explain all repairs in layman’s terms. They should also delineate between necessary and recommended services.
In summary, find a shop that’s dedicated to high-quality work and building long-term customer relationships.
