Key Cutting and Key Fob Replacement, Programming, and Keyless Entry

Car keys and key fobs are obviously critical for operating your vehicle, but many of us have only one key or fob in our possession. Many times that’s because we bought a used vehicle that only came with one, or we’ve lost our second set.

If you’ve ever looked into getting a second set or fob made, you know it can be quite expensive when going through the dealer. Until recently though, that was your only option.

Car Fob Programming & Keyless Entry Services

In the GreatWater network many of our shops offer key cutting and fob reprogramming or replacement for a fraction of the cost to get a replacement from the dealer. If you're in need of a spare key, having problems with your existing key fob, or you're looking for key fob programming services, contact us today. Even better, we can take care of it while you wait or while other work is being done on your vehicle.

What is Keyless Entry?

Keyless entry is exactly what it sounds like - it's a process of unlocking the vehicle without having to insert a key. Instead of using a physical key, you use a keyfob and push a button on it. The keyfob sends a signal to the vehicle receiver, which then unlocks it. Many keyfobs can do more than just unlock vehicles, lock them, pop the trunk, set off an alarm, or even remotely start the vehicle.

The Benefits of Key Fob Programming

The biggest benefit of key fob programming is the convenience of a properly working device. Most of us haven’t had to insert a key into the driver's side door to unlock the vehicle in many years. Drivers can now simply push a button to pop the trunk when their hands are full of groceries, use the remote start feature to allow the vehicle to warm up in cool weather, and trigger the alarm when there's a threat. On that latter note, key fob programming also comes with safety and security benefits as well.

The Risks of Using a Damaged Key Fob

If your key fob is failing or damaged, you're subject to several risks. These include:

  • Security issues: Weak signals from your key fob make them easier to intercept. This opens the door for thieves to potentially gain unauthorized access to your vehicle.
  • Poor functionality: If your key fob is damaged, it's simply not going to perform well. This could cause difficulties with remote entry and other features.
  • Your vehicle may not start: Key fobs also send signals to the vehicle so it can start and run. If the key fob is damaged, this signal could be affected and your vehicle may not start.

The first thing you should do if your key fob isn't working well is change the battery. If you're still having issues after a battery change, contact one of our shops that offers key fob services to have the issue addressed.
